AdBlue Introduction
AdBlue is a high purity non-toxic solution of Urea in demineralised water used in the exhaust systems of Euro4 or Euro5 trucks to reduce harmful emissions. AdBlue is a trade mark owned by the VDA, most truck manufacturers use the SCR system which requires AdBlue. To protect the SCR system the vehicle manufacturers have issued a specification standard DIN 70070 for the quality of AdBlue.
It is a common misconception that AdBlue is a fuel additive. AdBlue has a separate tank to the fuel; it is sprayed into the exhaust gases in the manifold where the urea solution breaks-down and reacts with the oxides of nitrogen to form harmless water and nitrogen. This occurs in the presence of a catalytic converter and is known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
Since October 2006 it has only been possible to register trucks in the EU that are Euro4 or Euro5 compliant in respect of exhaust emissions and most of these engine designs use SCR technology which requires AdBlue. Failure to use AdBlue is a vehicle that uses SCR technology will result in that engine having; reduced engine output (limp along) and put it outside compliance for harmful emissions.
AdBlue is a highly pure solution produced from special automotive grade urea and is sensitive to contamination.
BlueCat is our brand of AdBlue solution. BlueCat AdBlue is officially licensed by the VDA and fully complies with the official ISO2224 parts 1-4 (formerly DIN70070) and CEFIC standards.
